A bizarre incident occurred in Vadodara, Gujarat, India, where a groom demanded a divorce from his wife just after their wedding ceremony. Despite being advised against it, the groom persisted, and a few months later, he filed for divorce.

The young couple had tied the knot in January of this year at a local temple. The bride was a teacher, while the groom worked for a private company. The wedding was going smoothly until the groom found out that his wife had started her menstrual cycle on their wedding day.

In many parts of India, menstruation is considered impure, unclean, and can bring bad luck. As a result, girls are prohibited from participating in religious ceremonies when they are on their periods. Many women are even forced to leave their homes and live in makeshift tents outside, cut off from interacting with anyone until their period is over.

While there has been progress in changing people’s attitudes towards menstruation, some places still have a significant bias against women’s menstrual cycles. The groom’s family was a typical example.

Upon learning about his wife’s situation, the husband and his family were angry and frustrated. They felt betrayed by their beliefs, and as a result, the groom insisted on getting a divorce shortly after the wedding.

However, after witnessing the situation, many older people advised the couple not to get divorced. Despite the advice, the husband persisted and filed for divorce a few months later. The reason he gave for the divorce was shocking.

In his filing, the husband claimed that his wife forced him not to contribute to the family’s expenses and instead insisted that his brother-in-law should handle it. She demanded that he give her Rs. 5,000 (approximately $67) each month to spend as she pleased. Furthermore, she forced him to install an air conditioner in their house. When the husband said he didn’t have enough money to meet her demands, the wife became angry and left for her mother’s house in May.

According to the husband, his wife even challenged him to sleep with ten different men if he couldn’t buy her expensive items. Despite being shocked and angry, the husband tried to reason with his wife. However, she ignored him and even threatened to commit suicide by jumping from the rooftop.

Finally, the husband decided to proceed with the divorce. The local court has accepted the case and will verify both parties’ accounts before making a final decision.

The incident highlights the deep-rooted biases against menstruation in some parts of India and the need for more education and awareness on the issue. It also highlights the importance of communication and understanding in a relationship, as well as the consequences of a lack of these values.
